Blanchiment des dents:
les informations à connaître avant
de débuter un traitement.
- Whitening is a treatment that must be carried out on healthy teeth (no cavities) and clean teeth (no plaque or tartar).
- Whitening is only effective on tooth enamel. It is not possible to whiten composites, veneers, or crowns. If you want to whiten your teeth and you have restorations in the front, you will likely need to have your fillings redone later if their color no longer matches that of your natural teeth.
- Teeth whitening is not at all harmful to the enamel, however it may cause temporary sensitivity to the teeth during treatment.
- It is not indicated for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Here are the 2 whitening options available to you:
- Chairside whitening:
This type of whitening is performed in a single appointment at the dental office. The dental hygienist will first apply a protective barrier to your gums to protect them from the hydrogen peroxide-based whitening product, which will penetrate the pores of your teeth and treat their discoloration from the inside out.
The gel, which is chemically activated just before application, requires no hot, uncomfortable light to be effective.
After 40 to 60 minutes in contact with your teeth, the gel will have reached its maximum effectiveness and you will be able to observe the immediate result.
You may be given a few additional syringes of whitening gel afterwards to maintain the results obtained in the long term.
- Whitening at home:
This whitening method usually requires 2 appointments:
- An initial appointment at the clinic will be necessary to take impressions of your teeth. Whitening trays will then be custom-made in our laboratory.
- A second appointment, a few days later, will allow you to receive your personalized whitening shells as well as syringes of carbamide peroxide-based whitening gel which will treat the discoloration of your teeth in depth.
You will then receive all the instructions regarding the treatment that you will carry out at home, 60 minutes, once a day for a maximum of 14 days.
It is important to follow the instructions carefully during treatment in order to obtain optimal results (smoking, for example, should be completely avoided during your whitening treatment).
Moreover, certain foods can compromise the success of the treatment, such as wild berries, coffee, tea, red wine or any other products that can affect the color of your teeth.
It’s also important to know that whitening treatments have their own limitations when it comes to achieving a dazzling white smile. Each person has a different initial dentin color, which can affect the desired outcome.
It is wise to consult a dental professional about the indications and actions to avoid in order to put all the chances on your side to obtain the result you are aiming for.
